Average Gun

These are early days in the lifespan of The Ten Word Film Review Book, so as yet there hasn’t been a lot of feedback. I should probably be grateful, because I’m sure that over time about half of it will be people furiously telling me what a timeless classic Withnail And I is (it isn’t, it’s awful). However, two people have already pointed out that the book does not include Top Gun.

I didn’t deliberately leave out Top Gun. I have seen the film, albeit not since it was in cinemas, but it clearly never leapt out at me as something to be included in spite of there being a chapter about the Eighties. I recall it as being a rather silly film. Great-looking, kinetically shot, but somewhat vacuous. And for a generation of people it ruined one of the great ballads of the 1960s, You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.

Still, it’s evident I should have put it in, so in an act of pure stable door bolting, here you go:

“I feel the need… for lusciously photographed Navy recruitment propaganda”.
